WHY DO YOU LIKE INDONESIAN DANCING?

There are a thousand reasons why I love Indonesian dancing. The main reason is that it allows me to truly embrace the culture and learn more about it. Every movement we learn has a unique meaning: it reflects Indonesia in some way. Through traditional dancing, I gain a deeper insight into Indonesia’s diverse culture every single day. I love it!

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT INDONESIA?

My passion for Indonesia has stemmed from my upbringing: I’m half-Indonesian! This passion has definitely grown over the years, especially through Indonesian dancing. The more I learn about Indonesian culture, the more I realise there is so much I don’t yet know!

MY FAVOURITE STYLE OF INDONESIAN DANCE

My favourite style of Indonesian dance has to be traditional Javanese dancing, especially dances derived from Central and East Java. These dances tend to have delicate, soft movements – and are accompanied by the intricate sounds of the Javanese gamelan orchestra. I feel that everyone has a style of dance that best reflects their personality. The Javanese dance definitely reflects mine.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF SANGGAR LESTARI

I’ve been part of Sanggar Lestari since I could walk (yes, I learnt to dance when I was a toddler!) My mum, Ningsih Millane, founded Sanggar Lestari before I was born – but I’ve been immersed in the dance group’s activities for as long as I can remember. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Sanggar Lestari truly grow over the years – and I’m so proud to be a part of such a passionate, influential cultural group. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for the group. Peace Lestari!
