WHY DO YOU LIKE INDONESIAN DANCING?

I love Indonesian dancing because all of the movements and gestures shown do not only express the beauty but also dig the philosophy and the roots of its meaning amongst the body motions. Furthermore, the costumes are fascinating and genuinely identify the distinctiveness of the indigenous people around the archipelago.

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT INDONESIA?

Firstly, I was born and raised in Indonesia, where there are more than 300 ethnic groups and 600 languages of the indigenous people, which really inspires me to bring awareness of their cultures. There are a lot of essential values in their lives which I believe are relevant to ours today. Secondly, after living in Melbourne, which is a multicultural city, I have become more appreciative of my own culture.

MY FAVOURITE STYLE OF INDONESIAN DANCE

Among others, it is undeniable that my most favourite Indonesian dance is Kalimantan Dance. First, it is because of my husband’s influence through his Kalimantan music. Second, it is my first traditional dance which I learned by myself through its meaning and value of the movement. One of the unique examples is the Enggang dance or hornbill bird dance, which is a mythologic animal from the Dayak people. They believe that this bird is a symbol of faithfulness amongst the couple, as they will not ever betray his or her couple.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF SANGGAR LESTARI?

It’s about a month ago, just right after watching Sanggar Lestari Performance, I couldn’t help but signing up to the group because they danced beautifully and passionately. I’m so lucky to join this group as not only can I learn more about Indonesian Dance but also, I have a new family in Melbourne.
