KJRI Tempe Making Workshop in Melbourne

Lestari ladies Mira, Asti and Kartika, with their handmade tempe.

Sanggar Lestari had the pleasure of being invited to the Indonesian Consulate’s “101 Tempe Making in Melbourne” workshop.

How could we resist?

The workshop was led by Ibu Mantarina Herlianti, Chairlady of the Indonesian Ladies Association in Melbourne (DWP KJRI Melbourne), who showed us how to make tempe from scratch!

For those of you who don't know, tempe is a traditional Javanese food made from fermented soybeans. It can be fried, steamed, or boiled - and it’s delicious!

The workshop included step-by-step instructions on the fermentation process of tempe, as well as how to prepare tempe to suit your taste - whether you like your tempe sweet, spicy, or salty. You can find the full recipe on how to make tempe here.

Mira, Asti & Tika performing Tari Ngapote

As part of the event, our Lestari dancers - Asti, Kartika and Mira - performed ‘Ngapote’, a traditional dance from the Indonesian island of Madura.

Then, of course, the event concluded with a spontaneous line dancing session led by Mama Ning and the Lestari girls! This included some ‘Sajojo’, ‘Poco-Poco’ and ‘Gemu Fa Mir Re’.

What a great way to end the year - and we are so excited for what 2022 holds. Thank you to everyone who made this event happen - and we look forward to creating many more memories together, as we celebrate Indonesian culture in Melbourne.
