Festival Indonesia 2023

Sanggar Lestari has had such a fun, busy and fulfilling 2023! We’ve been busy with new members, school visits, festivals, weddings and two of our members were recently selected as delegates for the Indonesian Arts and Culture Exchange!

So…now that you know what we’ve been busy with, we’d love to update you about some of our latest events!

FESTIVAL INDONESIA 2023!

Festival Indonesia invited us to perform once again at their weekend event held in Argyle Square, Lygon Street. So we spent our time carefully learning just one dance to perform…just joking..that doesn’t sound like us? Of course we went above and beyond and got all hands on deck !

Performance 1 - For our first performance our founder Mama Ning and Yana were involved in singing and performing with the Maluku Basudara Choir! And what a performance this was, from our favourites ‘Ayo Mama’ to the tearjerker ‘Gandonge’, it was a fantastic performance! Thank you to Mama Ina and the team for including us for this choir!

Our second performance was Tari Empat Etnis from South Sulawesi. This dance was very special to us as Yana and Asti learnt this dance from KAZAKI Makassar, during their online participation of the Indonesian Arts and Culture program in 2021. You can watch the Empat Etnis dance here!

Our third performance was also related to our teachings and new dance knowledge from the program. The Gandrung Seblang Lukinto dance - a beautiful, mesmerising dance from Banyuwangi, East Java. Lestari girl, Yasmin, had recently learnt this dance with Deena during their exchange in Banyuwangi this year! We felt very proud to perform both dances and very grateful for the guidance and teachings from Kazaki in Makassar and Sanggar Lang Lang Buana in Banyuwangi! You can watch this on the link below

A huge terima kasih to all of our performers for their commitment to learning and performing these beautiful traditional dances. Thank you also to families and friends who came to support our performance! Keep an eye out for some photos and videos soon!

PEACE LESTARI
