Sanggar Lestari X 76m Films

The diversity of the Indonesian culture is one of the major drives behind Sanggar Lestari Melbourne. As a group, our aim is to preserve our culture through traditional dance, arts & theatre. Last year, we had the opportunity to work alongside the talented video production company, 76m to create a video that captured the essence of diversity in Indonesia in its truest form.

We also worked with music producer Swerv & Frankie Fresco who produced an incredible track for the video, and called upon our friend and make up artist, Susie Stevens to create a natural timeless look for each of our dancers.

We’re also very thankful for all our Lestari friends and family for lending a helping hand with keeping us fed by cooking delicious meals throughout the day and helping to put on our costumes and prepare the backdrops for our 2 days on set.

Behind The Name

In Indonesia, the words Tanah and Air separately mean land/soil (tanah) and water (air). However, when used together as one, Tanah Air holds a deeper meaning of Homeland.

Being an Indonesian cultural group in Australia, we know that it can be difficult to preserve the Indonesian culture using the limited resources we have abroad. However, we believe that regardless of how hard it may be, we should always do our best to honour each region of Indonesia by respecting its customs, traditional attire and dance movements as best we can.

With this video we wanted to take you back in time, to the root of the culture, and the place we are so proud to call our home. The land and seas of Indonesia.
