This weekend, we celebrated Halal Bihalal with the Maluku Basudara group at the Indonesian Consulate General, Melbourne.

Halal Bihalal is an Indonesian celebration that is carried out after the Muslim religious day, Eid al Fitr. The words 'Halal Bihalal' originates from the Arabic language, meaning 'to accept' or 'to forgive' each other.

Maluku also has a similar saying called Pela Gandong. ‘Pela’ means union or bond, and ‘Gandong’ means family. Both Halal Bi Halal and Pela Gandong were created to bring people together in unity and harmony, and this event did just that.

Sanggar Lestari performed 2 very different Indonesian dances for this event. The first dance is called Ngarak Penganten and the second dance is called Bajidor Kahot. Please enjoy the videos of both dances below
